Using Third-Party Personal Dictionaries

Recommended Method

Users can easily populate their personal dictionaries when they encounter new valid words from the MapSpeller Potential Typos dialog. However, they may be interested in copying and pasting the contents of other software personal dictionaries to their MapSpeller equivalent.

Two methods are illustrated here. The first one is recommended as it doesn't present any risk of corrupting MapSpeller personal dictionaries. Lets assume a user with a Windows login name of XYZ and that the user's Microsoft Word personal dictionary is located:

  • In Windows XP in: C:\Documents and Settings\XYZ\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof\CUSTOM.DIC
  • In Windows Vista or Windows 7 in: C:\Users\XYZ\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Proof\CUSTOM.DIC

The first method consists in:

  1. Placing all the content of the Microsoft Word file on the Windows clipboard (CTRL+A, then CTRL+C) using Windows Notepad.
  2. Inserting a title on ArcMap layout page
  3. Accessing the title's Property dialog
  4. Pasting the content of the clipboard in the dialog (CTRL+V)
  5. Running the MapSpeller spell-checker
  6. Adding the words to the personal dictionary from Potential Typos dialog which displays all the words not already in any of the active MapSpeller dictionaries or Locationaries.

Alternative Method

This alternative method edits the MapSpeller personal dictionary directly with Notepad*.

Important Notes

  • Dictionaries are case-sensitive.
  • For optimum processing speed, words should be listed in alphabetical order with uppercase letters taking precedence over lowercase ones.

*

Do not open your MapSpeller personal dictionary with other word processors or software products than Notepad as they may insert invisible characters that would corrupt the dictionary.
